Materials Bowl is a materials-based trivia and knowledge competition hosted by the Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society (TMS) every year. Material Advantage represents the University of Minnesota at the TMS Annual Meeting, where the competition is held, and competes against students from different chapters of Material Advantage from across the country and world!

What is Competition Like?

The Materials Bowl competition consists of two rounds of questions about materials science. The second round is for the top five teams of the competition so far, and the winning team takes home a cash prize for the chapter and for each student.

Only four students are allowed to make up the final team. These students will have their transportation and hotel stay funded for not only the competition, but also the TMS Annual Conference.

Throughout the year, we organize regular meetings to review material, practice, engage in mock competitions, and let professors explain relevant and novel topics in the form of mini-lectures. By the end of the Fall semester or the start of the Spring Semester, students will compete against one another for a spot on the Materials Bowl Traveling Team (to represent us at the national competition)! Because of the high-stakes, its best to attend as many meetings as possible to sharpen your skills and grow your knowledge.
